THE DISTRICT 2070 HISTORY, Italy and San Marino

A Part of our History of Rotary in Europe

Prepared by the district and not verified by Rotary Global History

RI District 2070

District 2070 includes the following areas:
- Emilia Romagna (except Piacenza)
- Republic of San Marino
- Tuscany

This territorial configuration was created by Rotary International with effect from 1972-73 and continues to be such to this day.
In previous years 1972-73 to the events of what would later become the District 2070 has been closely linked with those of Italian Rotary districts in Italy, generally.
There follows a chronological story of these developments and the time frame, is divided into two periods clarity from origins to territorial consolidation -
The period running from 1925, year of birth of structure all Italian district set to a single district,

"Italy was the first country in continental Europe to obtain recognition of his district (the 46 anniversary of Rotary International).
On 3 February 1925 was held in Milan the constituent meeting of the District with the intervention of the biggest Rotarian authorities, James Henderson, who was the first President of RC Milan became Governor.
It was subsequently ordered that the Secretary General should conduct all administrative duties of the organization from a central office in Milan, and from there, the coordination of the national Clubs would be officiated by the Governor." At this time, District 46 extended throughout the nation and was composed of 13 Rotary Clubs that counted 460 members.

In Italy the first Rotary Club is Milan, admitted to Rotary International in 1923.
At this point in time, worldwide Rotarian numbers are over 100,000 (101,700) and Rotary clubs are 1,796.

Rotary was disbanded in 1938 due to the fascist Government's decree banning all such associations.
In 1949 upon the end of the war, Rotary was quick to re-instate itself and Italy was again given a single district to cover the entire country - District 87.

In 1955/56, the region was divided into two districts, District 88 encompassing all clubs in the north east of the country, and District 92 encompassing the central regions.

In 1957/58, the district numbers were changed while retaining the same geographic regions. District 88 became District 186 while District 92 became District 188.

A territorial re-configuration
the period from 1972-73, Rotary International consolidated various territorial configurations.

During this period, our District Governor was Massimo Galletti of the RC Florence

"In the House of Alghero - June 1972 - which can be defined as the first Assembly of the new District 187, it was announced by Governor Massimo Galletti that a a newsletter, telegraphic, would be sent to all Clubs via their Presidents and Secretaries and the District Boards.
This newsletter was to be referred to as the "telex rotary", and encountered broad consensus among the Executives of the district's clubs, resulting in a valid communications of the district news.
The Governor Luigi Socini Guelfi continued the idea and recalls the hours of time to compile and print the bimonthly newsletter, directed to all Rotarians in the district.
A link with the news that will bring ideas and information will contribute to Rotary, ideas to talk and discuss in the club. The Commission Press-PR District is confident that all clubs will want to cooperate. Meanwhile read this leaflet, with indulgence and with enthusiasm. " (Lamberto Ariani) (ROTARYNOTIZIE - I - No. 1 - 1974) Rotary International admitted two new clubs:

Vignola - Castelfranco Emilia - Bazzano - Arezzo East.

In 1972, District 187 had 50 clubs and 2,832 Members.

The total contributions to the Foundation amounted to $ 12,321 U.S. the average per member was $ 4.35 U.S.

The District Conference was held in Florence, 6-7-8 April 1973 - the major topic on the agenda was addressing the problems of school reforms.

For the period from 1925 to 1971-72, the most significant events are recounted in the episodes and comments contained in the  volume by Ernesto Cianci, "Rotary in Italian society", Milan, Ed. Mursia, 1983.
The presentation, for each year said, is supplemented with information and references that are designed to facilitate easy reading.
For the period from 1972-73 onwards, the events are proposed district through reflection, synthesis and ideas expressed earlier by each Governor, with interventions at district meetings or writings published in the Rotarian press.
The complex and precise presentation is supplemented with information and historical statistics that show data and figures from Rotary International District or documentation.

For both periods, moreover, the most important elements that have emerged during research are summarised in some prospectuses presented in great detail in the district web site.

The three early clubs:

  * Florence
  * Livorno
  * Parma

  still are part of District 2070.
